Police suspect human remains could be Tayla Spies

Human remains have been located about 1km from the vehicle of missing Dalby/Roma woman Tayla Spies.

There was a breakthrough in the case at 3pm yesterday when a landowner on Yuleba-Surat Road said he had come across Ms Spies’ missing vehicle.

Police visited the address and confirmed the vehicle had belonged to Ms Spies. A search of the immediate area was conducted but called off due to poor light.

Police Detective Chief Inspector Gary Watts said the vehicle was found in poor condition about 2km off the road into the property.

Police set up a search and recovery base at the property this morning, 4 April, with police and SES conducting a grid search.

They confirmed about 1pm that they had found human remains on the property.

“We cannot confirm at this stage that those remains are those of Tayla, we suspect they may be, however a complete forensic evaluation will need to be conducted to verify that,” Detective Chief Inspector Watts said.

Detective Chief Inspector Watts said the next of kin of Ms Spies had been updated.

“A full forensic examination of the area where the remains have been found will now be undertaken.”

The vehicle is being towed back to Roma to be examined by Queensland Police scientific and crime scene experts.

The vehicle was found in Noorindoo, about 40km north-east of Surat.

The property owner does not believe the vehicle had been there for more than 12 days.

Ms Spies does not have any connection to the property that police know of.

The property backs onto the Yuleba State Forest.

The area has been impacted by recent heavy rainfall but police said it was too early to know if evidence has been affected.
