Rural Mental Health in spotlight

Rural Mental Health is in the spotlight with Free Wandoan community screening.

Radio, rugby league, resources and a love of regions will all be on the radar at an upcoming screening of The Promise when mental health advocate and rugby league media identity Craig Hamilton comes to town.

Senex Energy in partnership with Craig Hamilton, Green Tree Productions and supported by local rugby league legend Kirk Reynoldson are bringing the acclaimed mental health documentary The Promise to Wandoan for a community screening at 6.30pm, March 12 at the Wandoan Cultural Centre.

This special event aims to foster open discussions on mental health in regional communities.

Before the screening, mental health advocate Craig Hamilton will deliver a keynote address to provide insight into his personal experiences and mental health advocacy.

The Promise is a deeply moving documentary that explores the journey of Craig Hamilton, a well-known rugby league broadcaster and mental health advocate who has overcome significant personal battles with mental health.

The film expands beyond Craig’s story to include insights from leading experts, researchers, and well-known Australian figures—including Wayne Bennett, Jessica Rowe, Tim Tszyu, Joe Williams, and Paul Harragon—while amplifying the voices of everyday Australians affected by mental health.

Craig Hamilton, who has dedicated his life to mental health advocacy, emphasises the urgency of this movement saying this film is more than a story—it’s a mission.

“It’s about saving lives, breaking down stigma, and ensuring that people feel seen, heard, and supported,” said Mr Hamilton.

“By bringing The Promise to regional Queensland and towns like Wandoan, we’re opening up vital conversations and letting people know they are not alone.

“There is hope, there is help, and together, we can make a difference.”

President of Wandoan Health Auxiliary Karen Postle welcomed Craig Hamilton’s visit and appreciated the opportunity events like this played in encouraging important conversations about mental health in our community.

Senex Energy Community Relations Manager, Trevor Robertson said Senex is proud to partner with Green Frog Productions and Craig Hamilton to bring this screening to Wandoan as part of its commitment to supporting local health outcomes.

“Craig’s story is one for the regions. He’s a bloke who understands regional communities, their passions and their pressures – that’s why this is such a powerful story and one Senex wanted to help bring to Wandoan”.
