Chinchilla flood update

Flood level at Charley’s Creek Chinchilla, were current sitting at 6.16m at 7am on Thursday, down from 6.36m Wednesday night.

The Bureau of Meteorology said Charley’s Creek should peak at around 6.8m so further rises in flood water levels are expected unless otherwise advised by BoM.

The Burncluith Bridge River level gauge remains at a steady height of 4.59m. The water level at the Chinchilla Weir has risen overnight and is close to road height.

Chinchilla Tara Road remains open and will only be closed if flood levels pose a threat to the safety of road users.

The Warrego Highway through Chinchilla remains closed.

Chinchilla Schools are open.

Doorknocking by local police and SES emergency personnel wrapped up shortly before 10pm Wednesday night. With the return of daylight hours, Council will aim to determine the number of properties impacted by flooding above floorboards, if safe to do so.

Council is advising residents whose properties have been impacted by flooding overnight not to return until the floodwater has receded and it is completely safe to do so.

“Thank you to residents who heeded the flood warnings, prioritised their safety, and chose to self-evacuate early to stay with family and friends,” WDRC wrote.

Seven people presented at the at the Chinchilla Evacuation Centre at the Chinchilla Showgrounds overnight and we have been able to place them in local accommodation.

There are currently no residents accommodated at the Chinchilla Evacuation Centre at the Showgrounds. The centre remains open as a safe place for flood impacted residents.
